Haridwar'- Gateway to the Lord. One of the holiest Hindu pilgrim sites on the banks of the sacred river Ganga, Hardiwar is a bustling town with crowded markets, a multitude of temples, ashrams and ghats overflowing with pilgrims desirous of attaining a measure of salvation - in this life or in the next one. Most of Haridwar's visitors are temporary - mendicants and sadhus who stop here to offer prayers before venturing to greater heights, pilgrims seeking succour and foreigners in search of spiritual sustenance. Happily for its permanent residents, the turnover never stops and people keep flocking to Haridwar for the many spiritual delights that it offers.

PLACES OF INTEREST :

Har-ki-Pairi The most important and sacred bathing ghat of Haridwar, is also the site of Kumbh festivals. Ganga Aarti performed every evening is worth attending.

Bhimgoda Tank Associated with the Pandavas, of Mahabharata, the tank is said to have been created by a blow of Bhima's knee.

Gurukul Kangri University An old institution known for following the traditional Indian system of imparting education. The university precincts also house Ved Mandir Museum with many archaeological exhibits.

Beauty Point 2 km. On the way to Mansa Devi Temple, it is a vantage point with wonderful views of Haridwar and its forested surroundings.

Temples and Ashrams There are a large number of temples and ashrams in Haridwar. Some of the important ones are:

Mansa Devi Temple: on top of Vilwa Parvat, accessible also by ropeway carriage.

Manav Kalyan Ashram: the temple here depicts all the 24 avatars with Lord Shiva and Lord Krishna in ardhnarishwar form.

Bharat Mata Mandir: 6 km, devoted to Bharat Mata or Mother India. Its eight floors are decorated with scenes and images of events and people associated with the country.

Pawan Dham: has Hanuman temple made of pieces of glass.

Kankhal: one of the Punch Teerth (five Pilgrimages - Ganga, Kushwart, Bilwa Teerth, Neel Parvat and Kankhal), the Mahadev Temple and Sati Kund here are associated with the immolation in a yagya of Lord Shiva's first wife.

Parmarth Ashram; Sept Rishi Ashram and Sept Sarovar; Doodhadhari Temple; Maa Anandmayee Ashram; Shanti Kunj Ashram; Gayatree Teerth; and Chandi Devi Temple. There are a number of other temples and ashrams.

EXCURSIONS :

Kanva Rishi Ashram 42 km. On the bank of Malini river along the forest road to Kotdwar, the ashram is associated with mythological accounts of Shakuntala as described in Kalidas' Abhigyan Shakuntalam. It is connected by regular bus service from Kotdwar.

  • By Rail : Haridwar, on Northern Railway's broad and meter gauge lines, is connected to major centers in the country by train. Some important services are: 9019/9020 Bombay-Dehradun Exp.; 4309/4310 Ujjaini Exp. (Ujjain-Dehradun); 3009/3010 Doon Exp. (Calcutta-Dehradun); 4265/4266 Varanasi-Dehradun Exp.; 4113/4114 Dehradun-Allahabad Link Exp.; 4041/4042 Mussoorie Exp. (Delhi-Dehradun). Haridwar is also connected by meter gauge services to Rishikesh.
  • By Road : Haridwar, on State Highway 45, is connected to all major centers in the region and other parts of the country by good roads. Road distances to some important centers in the region are:Agra 368 km; Ambala 168 km; Badrinath 320 km; Dehradun 52 km; Delhi 214 km: Gangotri 282 km; Kedarnath 250 km; Meerut 141 km; Mussoorie 90 km; Nainital 386 km; Saharanpur 81 km: and Yamunotri 225 km

SHOPPING :
Haridwar is a pilgrimage center and visitors come here to visit the temples so as such there is no particular item, which can be recommended to be bought here. But Haridwar offers you some good handicraft items, which can be kept as decorative pieces or can be used as gift items. In the markets surrounding the temples, one can find jewellery imitations, which are very popular among the devotees. The bangles, chains, ear and nose rings are some items, which can be bought there.Then the shops also have items made of stone. From Rishikesh, Ganga enters the plains and in all this area it sheds its load of stones, which are not only polished naturally but come out in amazing shapes and sizes. These stone are used to make small idols, which are very neatly, delicately and intricately carved.
