Rishikesh Travel

Rishikesh, the 'place of sages' is a celebrated spiritual town on the bank of Ganga and is surrounded by shivvalik range of the Himalayas on three sides. It is believed that when Raibhya Rishi did hard penances, God appeared by the name of " Hrishikesh " and this area hencefirth came to be known as Rishikesh.

PLACES OF INTEREST :

Lakshmanjhula :About 2 kms upstream is the old footbridge called Lakshmanjhula, named after the brother of Lord Rama. Temples line both sides of the river at Lakshmanjhula
Triveni Ghat :
The Triveni Ghat, in the centre of town is the most prominent bathing ghat in Rishikesh. With its modern images of Hindu deities and white sandy beach, the ghat is ideal for a dip in the holy waters of the Ganga.
Bharat Mandir :The Bharat Mandir near Triveni Ghat is reputed to be the oldest temple in Rishikesh. The temple's presiding deity is a black stone Vishnu, which is believed to have been consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya when he visited Rishikesh in the 9th century. This occasion is commemorated with special celebrations on the day of Basant Panchami, the spring festival.
Swarg Ashram :Swarg Ashram, with its numerous ashrams, food stalls and shops is a haunt for those looking for insights into religious themes. The newly constructed Ram Jhoola straddles the Ganga at this point. You can also make a river crossing on the ferries that run during the day. Important shrines and ashrams at Swarg Ashram include Kali Kumbliwale founded by Swami Vishudhananda, Parmarth Niketan with large statues of gods and goddesses and the Gita Bhavan with its Ayurvedic dispensary and shop selling religious books and cotton Khadi.

ACCESS :
  • By Rail: Rishikesh is connected by rail via Haridwar (24 kms), to Howrah, Bombay, Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi, Dehradun and other cities.

  • By road Rishikesh to Haridwar 24 kms, Dehradun 47 kms, Mussoorie 77 kms, Badrinath 301 kms (Son Prayag), Kedarnath 228 kms, Gangotri 258 kms, Yamunotri 288 kms (Hanuman Chatti), Srinagar 105 kms, Joshimath 252 kms.
LOCAL TRANSPORT :
Local Vikram Tempos are available every where on the fixed route for fixed rate from Ghat Road Junction upto Lakshman & Ram Jhoola. Auto-rickshaws are also there but rates are to be negotiated. Unmetered Taxi service can be hired at the Haridwar road bus stand - 430413, rates negotiable or from transport wing of GMVN - 430372. Cycle rickshaws & Tongas also freely available. Ferry service can also be availed of near Ram Jhula for river crossing.
SHOPPING :
Being a pilgrimage place, the glamour of big shop bargains are absent but Rishikesh offers you handicraft items made of shells, beads and pearls. Sarees, kurtas, sheets and rugs can be purchased from here. You can buy these items from the government approved U.P handloom shop, Khadi Bhandar, Garhwal wool and craft shop etc.
