Shimla Travel
Shimla the summer capital of India before independence is
now the capital of Himachal Pradesh. Shimla derives its name from "Shyamala";- the goddess Kali, whose temple existed in the dense forest
that covered Jakhu Hill in the early 19th century. The English named
it Simla. Shimla is well connected by air, road and rail with all
parts of Himachal Pradesh, and the neighbouring states of Punjab,
Haryana, Jammu and Kashimir and the Union territory of Chandigarh.
Covering the area of 18 sq. km. at a height of 7,238 ft. Shimla is
surrounded by pine, deodar, oak and rhododendron forests. Its well
developed facilities, easy accessibility and numerous attractions
make it one of Indian's most popular and biggest hill-stations. |

| PLACES OF INTEREST : |
| Himalayan Aviary - Close to the Viceregal lodge is the
Himalayan Aviary or the Himalayan Bird Park. This park has very
good collection of birds found in Himachal such as Himalayan monal,
pheasants, peafowl's and national bird of India, the peacock..
Christ Church & St. Michael's Cathedral :In 1846-1857
was built the second oldest church of Northern India. The Christ
Church overlooks the ridge and is one of the landmarks of Shimla.
The clocks on Christ Church were added later and none of them are
functional now. The Church looks very beautiful with the stained
glasses fitted on the windows. The other church of Shimla is just
below the Central Telegraph Office and is Known as Michael's Cathedral.
Himachal State Museum& Library : This museum opens daily
except on Mondays and public holidays. It is located 2.5 kms west
of the scandal point. The entry is free. It has got a good collection
of statues, coins, photos and other items from all over the state
as well as outside it. It has also got a library which houses many
historical books and manuscripts.
THE RIDGE: The large open space in the heart of town presents
excellent view of the mountain ranges. Shimla's landmarks-the Neo-Gothic
structure of Christ Church and the new-Tudor library building are
worth seeing.
THE MALL: Main shopping centre of shimla with restaurants.
the Gaiety Theatre, which is a reproduction of an old British theatre
is a center of cultural activities. A passenger lift of HPTDC can
be taken from the Cart Road and the Mall. Lakkar Bazaar adjacent
to the Ridge is popular for its wood crafts and souvenirs.
KALI BARI TEMPLE: Few yards from scandal Point towards General
Post Office. It is believed that the idol of Goddess Shayamla is
enshrined there. |

| NALDEHRA (22 Km) 2044 m: Motorable On Shimla Tattapani
road. this is a nine hole golf course. It was designed by the British
viceroy, Lord Curzon who was so enchanted by this place that he
gave his daughter Alexandra, Naldehra as her second name. Ancient
Nag temple is also situated here. Himachal Tourism runs Hotel Golf
Glade here.
TATTAPANI (65 Km) 680 m: Motorable on Shimla-Mandi Highway
via Naldehra. Tattapani has hot water springs having sulpher contents,
also Hindu temples and Shiv Goofa at Saraur (4 Km) are worth seeing
places
CHINDI (94 Km) 2010 m: Motorable on Shimla-Mandi highway
via Tattapani - A beautiful place in Karsog Valley. Himachal tourism's
tourist Resort is opening shortly. One can also visit famous mahunag
Temple (18 Km). Mamleshwar mahadev Temple (13 Km) Kamaksha Devi
temple (19 Km) Pangna Killa/temple (8 Km) and Shikari Devi Temple
(18 Km).
RAMPUR (140 Km) 924 m: On the Hindustan Tibet Road. Once
the capital of the Princely State of Bushahr, the town is situated
on the banks of Satluj river, Big Commercial Centre and famous International
Lavi fare which is held in November every year, Dumgir Buddhist
Temple, Padam Palace, Raghunath Temple, Ayodhya temple and Narsingh
Temple, are worth visiting. Himachal Tourism runs a tourist Complex
and air conditioned Cafe, Satluj.
SARAHAN (176 Km) 1950 m: On Hindustan Tibet Road from Jeori
Sarahan is (17 Km) with spectacular view of Srikhand range. Sarahan
has the majestic Bhimkali Temple. Himachal Tourism runs Hotel Shrikhand.
Saharan is the gateway to Kinnaur. A Pheasant Breading Centre and
stadium are worth visiting.
Chail : Chail is hikers paradise. Chail was the summer
capital of Maharaja of Patiala. The area is spread over three hills.
One has the village of Chail, the other has the Snow View mansion
and the third one has the Palace cum hotel of Chail.

- By Air The airport is at Jubbarhatti, 23 km from Shimla
town, and is linked to Chandigarh, Kullu and Delhi.
- By Rail Nearest main line railhead is at Kalka, from
where one can take the scenic toy train upto Shimla. Chandigarh,
an alternative railway station, 120 kms away, is also connected
to Delhi by super fast trains.
- By Road 375 kms from Delhi, 120 kms from Chandigarh.

| Taxis are available here as the main local transport. Fare : Basic
rate for outstation is Rs.6/- per kms with a minimum charge of 150
kms per day plus Rs.80 as night halt charge. |
| SHOPPING : |
| The Himachal Emporium on the (eastern) Mall has a reasonable collection
of local handicrafts. The Tibetan Refugee handloom shop, at the other
end of the Mall, is the showroom for a local development project and
sells carpets, clothes and other Tibetan crafts. |
