Udaipur Travel
One of the most romantic cities in Rajasthan, Udaipur is also known
as the city of lakes. The marble palaces, beautifully laid out gardens
and the lakes make Udaipur seem almost like a mirage in the desert. The
founder of Udaipur, Maharana Udai Singh, was overcome by the misfortunes
that his old capital of Chittaurgarh had to face due to repeated attacks
by the Mughal armies. On the advice of a holy man, Udai Singh shifted
his capital to the banks of Lake Pichola- the city was named Udaipur
after him. |

| EXCURSIONS : |
| RANAKPUR - 90 kMS
This 15th Century Jain Temple is located 90 Kms. from Udaipur. The
temples in Ranakpur are quite unique in style and design. The ceilings
of the temples are carved with fine, lace-like foliate scrollwork
and geometric patterns. The domes are carved in concentric bands
and the brackets connecting the base of the dome with the top are
covered with figures of deities.
KUMBHALGARH - 84 kMS
After the Fort of Chittaurgarh, this is second most important fort
in Mewar region. The 15th Century bastion built by Maharana Kumbha
stands at 1100 Mts. atop of Aravalis commanding a strategic position
on the border beween the Rajput Kingdom of Mewar and Marwar.
HALDIGHATI - 40 Kms.
Perhaps the one word that brings awe into the minds of people contemplating
Rajasthan is Haldighati, a name shrouded in glorious battles where
honour surpassed victory. The name Haldighati came around because
the battlefield was a ghati (a narrow defile) in the mountains where
the earth was the colour of haldi (turmeric).
JAISAMAND - 48 kMS
Jaisamand lake is Asia's second largest artificial lake. Though
the water level for past few years has been lurking for the sake
of good rains, still its fine enough to be beautiful as the beautiful
Aravali surround Jaisamand.
Rajsamand Lake (66 km):
Close to Kankroli is the dam built by Maharana Raj Singh in
1660 A.D. Many ornamental arches and chhatris adorn the embankment.

slow enough to make getting around on a bicycle quite enjoyable. You
can hire bicycles all over town. RTDC and several private companies
offer daily tours of all the main sites. |
| SHOPPING : |
| Udaipur has countless small shops and many interesting local craft,
particularly paintings in the Rajput - Moghul style. There's a good
cluster of these shops on Lake Palace Road, next to the Rang Niwas
